Is a Business Page the same thing as a Fan Page?

Yes. They are one and the same, with Business Pages previously referred to as Fan Pages. What you do not want to confuse are Business Pages and Personal Profiles. These are two separate pages that offer different options, although you cannot have a Business Page without an associated Personal Profile.

A Business Page allows you to interact with friends, clients and customers as your business “face”, while a Personal Profile allows you to interact with friends, family and others in a face to face manner.

Because all Facebook Business Pages need to be linked to a Personal Profile, you need to have an e-mail address and name used for your personal profile linked to your Business Page. It should not be a catch-all e-mail address like info@yourbusiness.com, unless that is what you also use for your personal profile.

It is highly recommended that one of the owners of a business set up his or her own Business Page. If you have an employee set up the Business Page with his or her own personal profile account information, you run the risk of having that person leave your employ, with the result that you lose access to your own Facebook Business Page that was built and associated with the former employee’s personal profile. Under those circumstances, all of your accumulated fans/likes and information about your business could be lost. It is simply not worth the potential risk.

Once you have created the Business Page, you can designate any number of employees or other people with administrative (“admin”) privileges. You can also remove an admin at any point. This will prevent unsavory situations with your Business Page.

If you do not already have a Personal Profile, head on over to Facebook and create one. If you already have a Personal Profile, visit the Facebook Business Page creation tool while logged in to your personal account, and create your new page. Follow along with the images below to help you set up your Business Page.

When you come to the Create a Page - you will see six (6) options. Choose the best one that fits your business. You will notice when you click on one of the icons it will show categories. Most likely you will not want to choose the “Cause or Community” option because you can not customize the pages. Enter your page name and then check the “I agree to...” box. It is important to understand that the name you choose for the title of your Facebook Business Page will appear at the top of your finished page.

To get us started, you will have to designate us with “Admin” privileges. The easiest way to accomplish that is to let us know when you have the page set up. We will then “like” the page. Scroll down on your page, and find the listings for  “## People Like This”, then click on “See All”. Find our names in the list of People who like this Page (note that our profile photos may change, so search for our names), then click on “Make Admin”.

That is it. You have successfully created your Facebook Business Page. We will now begin to customize your Business Page with your input along the way.
