Peter Pelland

Founder + Print Department

Peter has had small business in his blood for an entire lifetime. The youngest of six siblings, he was born and raised in direct proximity to a family business in an extended family environment that included multiple entrepreneurs, primarily in the food and restaurant industries. Peter’s early independent ventures included map design, publishing, and book distribution, while studying Natural Resource Economics and Recreation Area Management at the University of Massachusetts and Montana State University. Upon graduation, he worked in newspaper and radio sales, as the circulation director of a city magazine, retail sporting goods sales management, freelance photography, serving as a contributing editor to two national magazines, and as a corporate sporting goods marketing director … all prior to founding the business that would become today’s Pelland Advertising in 1980. Initially producing four-color brochures for more than a dozen ski areas throughout the northeastern United States, the company soon specialized in meeting the marketing needs of private campgrounds in that same region and later throughout North America.

Peter’s leisure time pursuits include travel, photography, reading, writing, hiking, downhill skiing, kayaking, gourmet dining, craft beer, community service, tending his vegetable gardens, landscaping and woodlot management, exploring local history, foraging for wild edible mushrooms, researching his French-Canadian heritage, reviewing new products under the Amazon Vine program, and spending time with his Australian Shepherds. Peter and his wife live on a secluded hilltop in Western Massachusetts.

Josh Pelland

Your Web Developer

As a child, born two years after the founding of Pelland Advertising, I made frequent visits to printing presses and photo development labs with my father. My father was an early adopter of personal computers, so with great fascination, I was able to experience the internet or “World Wide Web” from the earliest stages, even before proper web browsers were invented.

As my father saw an opportunity for his clients in the mid to late 90s, he learned to build websites, and I learned alongside him, benefiting from his guidance, his 486 DX2/66 Comtrade PC and 56k dial-up internet connection, and what was some very expensive software at the time. By 1998, my first “major” website, on the topic of pirating Nintendo games to work on your computer, achieved over 1 million hits. And I was proud to have designed the best looking, easy-to-use site of its kind. It worked perfectly on Netscape and Internet Explorer. And then the banner ad company decided to stiff me for hundreds of dollars!

Fast forward to 2008, I began working on web and print for Pelland Advertising on a full-time basis. In 2011, I led the initiative to ensure our websites were fully responsive and mobile-friendly, yet bucking the popular concept of “mobile first” at the time. Why should I develop “mobile first” when a full size desktop/laptop display has the real estate to show an even better version of the website? In this, and other ways, over time I’ve evolved my practice with technological advances, while keeping my work “boutique”, and without losing sight of what fundamentally makes a “good” website. Cookie-cutter templates and minimalism (or an abundance of useless distractions) for its own sake were never the way.

Now, even with major advancements in AI-assisted coding and development tools, I am pleased to discover that my decades of experience remains just as relevant, even while adapting to the latest techniques and highest standards for the benefit of my clients.

Along the way, I’ve quietly become one of the more proficient web developers of my generation, and for the outdoor hospitality industry. My clients, many of whom I’ve known for decades, know me as dependable, quick, cordial and professional. I have great respect for the hard work they do, as successful entrepreneurs. They deserve my best effort and I don’t take their decision to trust me as their webmaster for granted.

These days, I’m living and working alongside a cornfield in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Married, with two children, and homeschooling, I’m blessed with a career that gives me some flexibility. If I don’t respond to you right away, I might be mowing my yard, taking a ski day, out at the farmers’ market, practicing guitar or spending a little time with my family.
